Matt Kjorstad (Jor-Stad) is the Chief Executive Officer for First Tee- Greater Detroit, an initiative of The Children’s Foundation. Matt is responsible for leading First Tee-Greater Detroit to impact the lives of the young people of Detroit by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values, and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.

Matt is an organizational leader who has a mission to create a culture of inclusion in every space that he leads. Matt believes that any decision in serving the community will be done in partnership with the community.  He focuses on providing opportunities for young people to use their voice, minds, and heart to be a leader in every part of their lives and prioritizes building authentic relationships.

Matt’s passion is driven by his lived experiences and uses lessons learned in his 4 years spent serving as a non-commissioned officer in the United States Marine Corps, and the 25 years partnering with the YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities to serve communities and neighborhoods all over the state of Minnesota.

Matt has also created impact as a trainer, facilitator, and expert in youth and community development. Named a “Top 40 Under 40” by Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Magazine in 2014, Matt was recognized for being a leader that has provided impact to the Twin Cities area with his innovative approach in serving the community, contributing to developing best practices, and for the overall impact he has made in serving thousands of young people and families. Matt was also recognized as the Isuzu Afterschool Hero of the Year in 2000 and many other national, state, and local recognitions and awards.

After relocating to Michigan, Matt looks forward to learning more about the rich history of the city of Detroit and experiencing the community firsthand. Matt has celebrated his love of music his whole life, as a DJ and through the long list of concerts he has attended. He also enjoys sports which includes his love for the game of golf, and his experiences in stand-up comedy. He spends a lot of his time away from the office travelling to experience different parts of the country. Matt appreciates most his experiences within the community, laughing, and learning from everyone he meets; most importantly you will instantly feel the passion he has in seeing young people succeed.
