Frequently Asked Questions
What is First Tee's purpose?
We know that character is something you cultivate. We exist to enable kids to build the strength of character that empowers them through a lifetime of new challenges.
How do you build character through golf?
We see golf as a metaphor for life – a game with unexpected challenges and ups and downs that help build strengths beyond the technical skills to play the game. Through introspective questions, interactive games, and immersive golf exercises, we design each lesson to help kids build a better understanding of themselves and empower them to strengthen the parts of them that they take to everything they do. Research proves it works.
Will my child be participating in a safe environment?
First Tee and its chapters are committed to creating and maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for all participants and individuals affiliated with the organization. As part of our commitment, all employees, coaches, and volunteers must complete a background check before working with our youth. In addition, all employees, coaches, volunteers, and board members will be required to complete the SafeSport training program.
What are the core focus areas helping kids to develop?
We focus on helping kids develop their character, resilience, self-confidence, and inner strength. Throughout our program we use golf to empower this growth while enabling kids to learn and play the game.
Who can play?
We offer age-based classes to kids and teens ages 7-16, regardless of background or previous experience. All we ask is that kids come with an open mind and positive attitude!
(There is a summer program for children ages 5-6)
Do I need to provide golf equipment for my child?
We provide access to all the equipment you will need. No need for special golf attire.
Financial concerns?
No worries—you can apply for financial assistance during the registration process.
During the registration process, you will be asked to answer a few questions. You will then be contacted to provide supporting documentation and based on that documentation, we will award between 15% – 30% of fees covered.
We do not cover 100% of fees.
No FA available for late registrations.
Does my child need prior golf experience?
There is no prior golf experience needed. Our coaches are trained in positive youth development. That means they are experts in making young people feel comfortable and assure they have a positive, non-intimidating experience.
How do I register my child?
All registrations are done on-line through our website. You can register here: https://firstteegreaterdetroit.org/registration/
What if my child is sick?
If your child is sick or has been around anyone else that has been sick, we ask that they stay home for that class. The well being of our participants and coaches id our top priority.
If your child discloses that they have been around someone positive with COVID19 and attends class, we must disclose a positive or negative test with the parents/guardians of other children your child may have interacted with.
There are no makeup classes, credits, or refunds for missed classes.
